OG Kush: A Cannabis Legend

OG Kush is arguably one of the most iconic cannabis strains, often mentioned in the music world and promoted by artists such as Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, and Kaaris. But what are the true origins of OG Kush? While its success is undeniable, its provenance remains mysterious, fueling many legends in the cannabis world.

The History of OG Kush

OG Kush is a hybrid that originated from a cross between several cannabis strains, likely a mix of Chemdawg , Lemon Thai Kush , and Paki Kush . Much of its genetics are believed to have originated in the Hindu Kush mountain range, located between Pakistan and Afghanistan. In the 1960s and 1970s, many cannabis enthusiasts imported these genetics for their unique growing qualities and psychoactive effects.

OG Kush is believed to have emerged in the southern United States in the 1990s. The key figure in this story is Josh Del Rosso, founder of Josh D Farms, who is said to have made the cross that resulted in the “California Queen,” now known as OG Kush. The initial seed reportedly came from Matt Berger, famous for Bubba and Kryptonite. Some say Josh D wanted to prove to Matt Berger that his region grew better cannabis, while others say OG Kush may be a direct descendant of Kryptonite.

What does "OG Kush" mean?

The name "OG Kush" is as mysterious as its origins. While "Kush" refers to its strain type and the Hindu Kush region, the abbreviation "OG" gives rise to many hypotheses:

  • Original Gangster : In reference to gangsta rap, which quickly adopted this variety.
  • OverGrown.com : Referring to a cannabis discussion site.
  • Ocean Grown : Evoking the beaches of California, birthplace of OG Kush.
  • Original : Emphasizing that this is the original, authentic and genuine variety.

The most likely theory would be the latter, confirmed by Josh D himself.

Organoleptic Properties

OG Kush is particularly prized for its distinctive aromas and flavors. Its terpene profile is rich in caryophyllene, limonene, and myrcene, offering flavors of citrus and coffee, with earthy and gasoline notes.

In short, OG Kush, beyond its success and fame, is a strain shrouded in mystery that continues to fascinate and inspire cannabis enthusiasts around the world.
